I pulled my original entry. Don't care if this tanks as much as the other. I like this one, just not as much. Not sure people are going to get what I'm going for here. I want to show the black and white world as it is. Body language is so telling. My favorite part is the 2 blow up bats she used as a shield of sorts. People are just weird. That's all I got to say.

Edits:
crop
levels
little extra blur on the distracting background
brightness and contrast
save for web

And yes, I know there is noise. I left it there on purpose.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their comments - they are very appreciated. Seems some got my message. I waited on a bench across from the woman on sunday evening and after about 45 minutes the teen/boy sat down and I thought this was perfect for the challenge. You practically can't pay people to pose this well.

I sat on this photo during the voting period, intending to come back to it because it struck me as a really terrific submission for the theme. I never got back to voting and I am sorry for that as this picture really moved me. The two people, sitting so close, but so disconnected from one another seems very sad to me. As you mention in your notes the two bats form a barrier between the two people and they both have expressions that say they'd rather be anywhere else but where they are sitting. The technical quality of the shot is OK, but the story is top notch. adding to my favorites.

For me, this has quite the social statement. Bumping up after second look. Good luck in the challenge. :-)

Visually thought-provoking and quite a contrast on many levels. The juxtaposition of the man of color, the white lady, the haves and the have nots, the youth and the aging, the directions in which they are looking (as well as the directions their lives have taken them)...they all come together nicely. Gotta wonder what those inflatable bats are for. I wish there was a tiny bit more room at the feet, but that's neither here nor there. Well done. :)

excellent capture. A very suggestive picture filled with implied meaning even down to the bats. This is one that can be examined and discussed for quite a while. There are so many contrasts to be seen, black;white, male;female, young;old, etc. etc. I have to give you a 10 on your observant eye and capturing the moment. Super!

I love the urban quality of this. I don't think the "natural" contrast could have been any better and you created more by making it black and white.

I always love these type of shots. The only distraction is the woman seems to be a bit oof....regardless a really good job.

This is a great shot from the story perspective. Feels a little out of focus, but it made it in my top 10.

I like the plural use of contrast here - both photogenic and subject wise...

I like the parallel between the bats and skin color, though I presume you've already noticed that - it rounds off a very interesting picture.. black and white, man and woman, young and old(er), casual and dressy, skinny and fat, and they are both looking away from each other - even seemingly occupied by different types of thoughts. The bats serve to further divide the image and accentuate everything for me. 10 and a new favorite.

Hmm... Really great capture of very contrasting elements. The dichotomy is quite apparent. Nice job.
