I was getting upset with myself because I have been saying I was going to submit something since I joined, and at long last.

I know the picture isn't great, but I what I am hoping for is some great feedback that I have seen others get.

Anyway, what I did was, I took a picture of my friend working on his brand new laptop. Then, I converted it from raw to .jpg and adjusted the levels slightly. Then I cropped it for a more interesting look.

oh, I forgot to ask, incase anyone else decides to read this. I have a question about the softness. Someone mentioned it's too soft for them. I think it's the lense I have, it has a very soft focus. How can I fix this in Photoshop, or can I? Do I just need to save up(way up) for a new lense with sharper focus?

Very nice angle. I think your angle defiantly helped this photo step from a straight on shot. The dim lighting is nice and very appropriate for the piece. I think this is probably a harder subject to photograph because the idea is basic but so perfect for this group. I would have brought the image in some, maybe cropped some of the fireplace or played with makes the subject fit into the law of thirds. Sometime I just try the law of thirds to make sure I am not missing anything. It is really interesting that he may be sitting on a bed, at first I thought it was a couch but since there is no back I would assume its a bed (in addition to the pillow). I also liked that you left the blinds half open. Overall I think you did a good job with the subject you chose. The lighting is nice, I think a harsher light would have taken away from the image. This is a much more respectable first entry then many, my self included. Oh one last thing, I really do like the reflection from the laptop on his face. Good job!

I like the dim lighting -- it really conveys the feeling.

Could've titled this "Average DPC Member" : )

I really like the angle on this one; it almost appears that instead of the camera being tilted, everything in the room is sloped. Better lighting would make this image pop out more -- plus although it's a nice idea, it doesn't fit so well if the idea of a "Portrait", in my opinion.

Different and very stock-photo-like. I like it.

This just doesn't seem like a portrait to me. If it were lit better and the photo were straight it would look more like a stock photo.

Hmm this would the only way to take a portrait of my husband. Good shot, I like the lighting from the laptop giving such a strong reflection.

Good capture. Lighting was done well, but must have been difficult to get exposure right. The tilt bothers me some but basically done well.

With the photo at that angle I feel as if the water is about to spill off the table and it makes me want to reach out and grab it. I like the glow from the computer around his face.

too broad, good idea, but I would like ta have seen the subject drawn in a little.

seems like a snapshot.

Nice "real life moment portrait"a nd a good idea, I like the reflection of the monitor on his face.

Not my interpretation of a portrait. Had the photo been closer and more intimate, maybe.

I like the way the monitor is reflecting on his face, however this looks more like a snapshot than a portrait. Also the room is tilted (or he's on a boat)

Need more of the subject in the frame and say "less fireplace". You could have made the interesting glow of the monitor more dramatic.

I feel myself leaning to my left when viewing this picture. Could use some rotation.
09/12/2005 11:54:24 AM
This is more of a candid (slight slanting angle) than a portrait.

I think this would have been more effective if you had made sure your camera was level - the fireplace and window frame as well as the table are all rotated.

this looks like the story of my life....nice shot!

Wow, wish my house was this clean. Great shot and angle!
