A crop of one of many photos taken of Iubita Mea (ask a Romanian) while visiting the National Zoo in Washington, DC. Funny thing was, we didn't know about the challenge when we took these photos, it was serendipity, baby!

I liked this shot, but wanted to do something different than I normally would. You see, I like B&W shots and judging by my profile, I've submitted too many of them. I want to get better at color. This is definately a color shot, whether it is better remains to be seen.

Post-processing here was fairly simple, but just time intensive. I made a copy of the background layer and tweaked it with Hue/Saturation. Then I made seperate layers for both the hair and the eyes, and tweaked those with Hue/Saturation as well. Finally, I used the smudge tool set to 'Color' on the background layer copy, which helped to spread the color more and soffen some of the graininess.

Here's to you, Iubita mea!!!

Critique Club Comment:

Strangely enough, my first reaction was COOL.
Then I read the notes and it's clear to me why this pic scored low.
But the score you got is way too low imho.
Where is the rule about too much Post processing?
I like it, it wouldn't be my pick for the blue, but somewhere around a 5.4 – 5.6 would have been a more realistic score if I was the sole judge...
Well I guess you have learned a lesson. Not everybody has the same taste ;)
And DPC is a real difficult crowd when it comes to “different” pictures.
Out of the box is never a good idea if you want to score, but it is cool....
Cograts, and keep up the good work.

I normally don't like hue/sat wierdness but I thought the end result here was great. I was one of the 7 voters. Not enough against the hordes...sorry.

A lovely face. The departure from the norm may cost you. This lovely face can easily remain in the upper 6 without the effect. 6

Nice image but a little too stylized to be a true portrait for me... :)

How to screw up a cute face, sometimes a little knowledge is dangerous. Sorry I don't like this I know it wasn't easy but still not for me.

I am not real fond of the effects on this image. I would have liked to have seen the model without the effect. Beautiful eyes.

The processing on this is a little out there. Composition is alright, maybe a little tight. The eyes and her expression are nice. Definitely an "out of the box" type portrait. :-)

At first I thought...hmmmm...now that I've looked at it for a few minutes...kinda cool. Lots of photo-editing fun. My favorite part is the eyes.
