Thanks for the comments, guys. Yes, I am enjoying the new cam, though it's out of my hands in 3 more weeks. :( I think this shot did well for my first submission with a different cam and for being shot 6 hrs before deadline. lol One 1 I'll take any day, but I'd love less 4's and more 7's!
As for the critique - I don't much care for borders either way. I only border my pics because people seem to like that. I was trying to make the arrow point to the house, but I didn't have time to reshoot taking the top off of it, so that was a mistake, just one I failed to correct.
Thanks all! |

hey mav? Enjoying the new camera? This was a nice shot. I gave it a 6. Something about it just seems crooked. It's hard to get something like that right with the angle showing the flag and the lines of the mailbox. Also the top part doesn't look great cut off. I would have stepped back one or two steps. BTW, love the desaturation, as you know, i do it all the time. In my opinion, this type of creative post processing doesn't score well on here though (as can be evidenced by both my entries this week that are under 5...) oh well. nice photo. |

I'm glad that where I'm at, home is, because I'm not home! I'm on the road and found a computer for a few minutes. Nice shot! I agree with the critique. And I thought the red arrow pointed to the house as well! |

FROM THE CRITIQUE CLUB
Hi, Mavrik,
I'm so glad I got your picture! It's such a neat shot for "Home Sweet Home" and I'm surprised you didn't get a higher score. Anyway.
During the voting, I was looking at the photos with my little girl, and when we came to this one, she started laughing, and said, "Mami, look, the red arrow is pointing to the house!". I had not noticed that. I don't know if it's intentional, I get the feeling it wasn't since you were trying for an out of focus background, but it works.
OK, to the comments.
Challenge: This picture meets the challenge very well.
Technical stuff: To my eyes, lighting and focus are very good. I think that a more out of focus background would not serve well here, but as it is, it's just right. Possibly there could be a bit more contrast between the mailbox/wood block and the grass.
Composition: Excellent! The lines of the mailbox lead my eyes to the house, they wander around there, look at the trees, then I come back to the mailbox and notice the grain in the wood block, and so on. You keep the viewer busy looking at the picture, that's good. The square format is very good here, as is the choice of B/W + red.
Border: IMHO, a simple black border would have been better. The picture doesn't need the fancier border.
Overall: Like I said at the beginning, I'm surprised your picture didn't go higher in the scoring.
Anyway. Keep up the good work! Take care,
Ursula (uabresch)

Thanks orussell. :) I thought it would do better than 5.5 but that's ok! Higher than my average!
Thanks all - I understand this shot's flaws. |

Marvik, I honestly thought that this was a top three pic. Was definitely one of my favorites. |

Do I spy some spot editing? Or is the world now black & white with red bits? |

I really like this image. I like the way the close up and the angle of the image makes it stand out nicely. Good job. |

Pretty cool effect. Was it a black and white photo? I feel it might have been good to lift the flag giving a sence of excitment and anticipation. I like how the mail box points towards your front door, It's sort of welcoming and inviting. |
