Took it in my studio (my balcony) and used the evening sunlight. Used auto levels and turned it to b/w and sharpened it. Dodge the pawn that was white to begin with but not standing out that much.

I like the setup and angle. For me though, I wish there was a bit more focus overall. I also wonder who this would look in color.

I like your take on the challenge - very nice. Looks like a bit of burning? The white pawn has a strange halo around it.

This is a great idea, but it doesn't give off the "wide angle" look that I am looking for in these photos. The idea of making one piece stand out is great, but the other pieces seem almost too dark and out of focus.
