Critique Club checking in.
Very nice photo, excellent representation of grain, and the desat/toning is just about perfect, to me anyway. Nice and sharp where it has to be, well exposed and good use of DOF, although it is subtle in this image.
The eyes are in focus, as they should be in a portrait. One eye has 3 catchlights, the other I see none. Each eye should have one, to be 'perfect' that is.
Compositionally I like this - the eyes are centered, but the whiskers lead my eye to the nose, and then they go up to the eyes and stay there. By croppping the ears the way you did I know the cat is not deformed (so my mind is not distracted trying to understand why) and that the easr are not important to message you are trying to pass along.
You are proabably bothered by your score, especially since I fond no real issus with your photo, huh? Two things come to mind - since the challenge specified the grain to be an 'integral part of the message' I think that is where the voters fond this image lacking. The second is the title - not very esciting or dynamic, no tie to the challenge, so it could be better - perhaps "NightStalker" or "The Hunt Begins".
Again, a nice photo you should be proud of! |

Well personal I think it should have finished higher, I voted much higher. I think the image was eye catching, maybe just a little more color to give it an edge. |

I voted it a 5. I felt it was a very well taken photograph with a cute subject and good dof. The grain worked well. However, it didn't strike me enough to lift it beyond being "a good photograph". A number of things could have done that - lighting, expression, unusual pose, humour, etc. but there is none of that.
What bear has done lifts the image and gives it more oomph but IMO still does not endow it with that special something to lift it above the crowd. |

Leaving grain issues aside, the main "shortcoming" of this shot is a lack of "life" in the eyes. Typically on animal face closeups like this a sense of luminosity int he eyes pays big bonus points. Also this image is overall very flat feeling, with little tonal variation even between cat and BG, let alone throughout the cat itself.
Sharpness and DOF are exceptionally nice here. It's all-in-all a very nice image; it just lacks that extra POP that would boost its memorability factor. |

I liked this shot, animals dont always go down well here (ask me most of my shots are cats and horses!!), the grain is nice but I think it might have had more impact and maybe scored a bit higher if the kitty had been looking at the camera (easier said than done when working with animals I know believe me). I took the liberty of playing with the shot a bit in PS, upped the contrast a fraction, brought down the brightness a smidgen and coverted to greyscale and feel it improved the shot. Give it a try, hope this helps. |

I am no expert on grain and couldn't enter or vote on the members challenge but here is my $.02 (probably worth less).
Not sure if there is a big difference between grain and noise (I would think so). I look at the image and I see multi-colored noise, mind you it isn't a lot of colors but I see enough to say it is not just grain and others that voted may have thought the same.
It is a good picture with good detail and lighting, focus and DOF but also doesn't hold my interest for an extended amount of time. I vote higher on images that make me stop and look at the entire picture and really amaze me.
Sorry you didn't do as well as you hoped...this is the story of my life over and over again. :o) |

I wonder if b/w would have suited this superb shot better? 9 |
