Funny, this was my favorite of the series and it was actually just a test shot to see how a lit match (left) would appear w/o lighting the match that I had set up on a stand (right). I liked the low contrast and the composition. I felt like it was more original than just the plain candle and could even invoke questions in the viewer (why two matches to light a candle?). Unfortunaltely you can barely tell the match in the hand is lit, but oh well. Oh, and I think my hand looks uncharacteristically photogenic here.

I chose black and white to blend the candle a little more with the background and because of my recent obsession with the genre. I also NeatImaged the photo because the grain (even as slight as it was) I felt took away from the cleanness that the pure whites and unlit candle and match presented. I adjusted curves ever so slightly to add a barely noticeable amount of contrast, and then finally cropped the tiny bit of the clamp holding the match that had snuck into the frame.

I fear the image may suffer from the lack of detail-- but there inherently wasn't much here to begin with-- and maybe because the hand isn't in focus? The latter doesn't bother me because it isn't supposed to be the focus of the photo, but it does occupy much of the frame. Oh, and also the hand isn't "light."

I forgot to mention, I also like this photo for the unintentional play on the word "light."

Greetings from the Critique Club

This image lets you say why the two matches what was the purpose. The match on the right just doesn't do anything for the photo except to be distracting.

Your lighting seems good and the subject is in good focus you definately met the challenge well with this.

Even now looking at it I wonder why isn't the one match or the candle lit for effect?

Anna

Maybe you could try this photo with the matches lit.

i think the right match is useless,or at least we should have seen the right hand, then it would've been more on center.this way,it's too off center, otherwise,i like it,except that also, what are you doing with the matches?i don't see any light.maybe because of the white background.6

I can see detail in the candel all the way to the edge, so you did really well mot to blow out the highlights. I wish I could see a little more color though.
