Yup, that's what they're called alright, don't ask me why though - These seven ton crushing balls were used to crush large rocks to eventually retrieve gold in gold mining operations in Goldvein, VA. Although still a mystery, these balls were thought to run off a steam engine and roll around in a small trough while water and agitation was used to break up the rocks.

I couldn't resist! I saw this image and I knew just why they named these "Hornet Balls" I was visiting an Uncle in North Caolina and he had found this leaf with a "hornet ball" on it. So I thought I would share with you with a a little photoshop fun.

The tree leaning in on the left throws this off. Maybe standing to the left and a little closer?? Or closer looking up at one of them with that awesome sky as the background?

That is truly odd. Nice framing and composition (including the tree and sky). Nice rich colors as well.
