 I went to the local Hmong New Year festival that was held at the local art museum. I was wandering around inside the gallery talking to some of the people while others were performing Hmong song, dance, and music. This lady intrigued me more than any of the others. She was selling her hand-made clothing and blankets. I approached her and asked her if she would allow me to take her photograph. She didn't speak any English, so I pointed to my camera and she just smiled. I snapped a photograph and then thanked her. There was another lady standing close by who was watching me. She asked me if I wanted to talk to the lady and offered to translate for me. My subject's name is Her Lee and she is from Laos. She is only in the United States for a couple weeks and will be returning home at the end of November. It was a pleasure to meet her even though I couldn't talk to her directly.

The light in the art gallery is very poor for photography for obvious reasons. I wish I had thought about this photo a little more before I actually shot it. I would have put my 50mm f/1.4 lens on and shot it at a lower ISO with a faster shutter speed in the available light. I also decided to submit this one in color to the free study challenge. My personal copy of this is in black and white, as is the entire collection of the 1000 Faces project that I'm currently working on. I thought the color in this photo had good enough interest to show it both ways :)

Post Processing:

Dodged the whites of her eyes just a tad...

Burned the shadow areas of her skin wrinkles just a tad to accent...

Curves layer to balance the exposure...

Hue and Saturation layer to enhance the color...

Oh, yes! This is an amazing face, and I think you did an excellent job of letting us see through "the face" to the soul. Very very niiiiiiiice!

Gave it a 6. I thought it had character, was a good capture of it, colors were good, didn't mind the rotation but, if it were a bit sharper (less 'blurred'), especially to bring out more of that character (wrinkles etc), may have made it even better in my opinion. Thank you for the 'insight', good read.

Not a particularly appealing subject, so there needs to be something that compensates in this image. I'm sorry I can't find it.
