Greetings from the Critique Club...
I think I may be able to help you out on why this photo didn't score well by asking you a simple question...
What's the subject of this photo?
If the subject is the waterfall, we need to see more of it. I believe your intent was to show the texture of the railing for the purpose of this challenge though. That being the case, it should be in focus. You didn't manage to achieve that in this photo. Your focus went to the waterfall instead and the textured rail fell inside the depth of field for your camera's settings on this shot.

I might have gone for the rail being in focus making the pattern the main subject. |

I think this looks good in black and white. I find the primary subject and the focus to be at odds here. The primary subject, referenced by the title, is not in sharp focus, but the background is. The background certainly helps provide reasoning for the railing, though I wish the railing was in sharper focus than the backround. |

This would be a lot better if the railing was in focus and not washed out. It also needs to be more prominent in the picture, it took a second to notice there was a railing in the picture. |

I get the idea but why did you focus on the waterfalls and not on the rail? The rail is suppose to be the subject right? As for the crop, I maybe a tighter crop from the top, to put more focus on the rail once again. |

I know the foreground is your subject but the falls in the background makes this picture look like it's a ruined shot (like the rail got in the way). If you're focused on the rail maybe don't have such a magnificant scene in the background because it pulls the eye away from your subject. |

I think it would have been extremely cool if you could have gotten that rail fully in focus (while still leaving the rest in focus, too)... |

Unfortunately, it's not the pattern that catches my eye here; the focus is on the waterfall. The macro setting might have helped to focus on the railing. |

Original concept, and I like the view. :) |

I would of made the foreground in focus with the waterfall blurred to capture the pattern on the pole... |
