This photo was taken on a beautiful sunny day in the Old Port area of Portland, Maine. The Old Port dates back to the 1700's and has many narrow streets and original buildings from the 1800's. Its a popular area, right on the waterfront of Casco Bay.

Thanks for all your comments... I wasn't happy with this photo anyway and had second thoughts about submitting it. I did take plenty of other shots as many of you suggested, but most of them didn't show any "life". I guess its all in the interpretation ;)

... for the record, I'm not gay.

I don't think the fence on the right side does anything for the photo.

Nicely shot and lit. I would prefer the right side cropped a bit tighter.

I see what would have been two great shots -- but I don't think they work that well together. I love the contrast of green fixtures and grass and red brick of the tavern/bar/restaurant as much as I love all the bright colors of the kite shop. I think you would have had a much more intriguing shot if you'd focus on one business or the other instead of trying to include both of them.

Excellent find! Very well-executed, too.

Nice colors, but I'm not sure what the focus of the pic is.

Nice perspective. Very colorful.

i would have made a step forward ;-) that way the dark and distracting wooden fence would be out and more of the interesting stuff in the background could be seen.
the colorful baloons and banners catch my interest but that's not what's in focus.

Very colorful. W/o the title, I would have guessed New Orleans. Very nice, only suggestion would be crop the right side and bottom. Good job!

Personaly I would have used 640 X 427 format and croped out the airconditioner. BTW one of my top picks.

I like the contrast of colors.

Nice depiction of city life. A little different ange (from the left and closer to the ground) would have eliminated the fencing on the right, and given a clearer image of the people enjoying themselves. I know, you were trying to be discreet. This is my problem, too. I don't have the courage to go out and make myself obvious....yet!

to cluttered, a little more intimacy would be preferable.

I see the gay flag! Cool! High marks just for having that in the pic! :-)

I had a photo that described my city in the way you did, and had I seen yours I would have had the guts to submit mine. I'll give you the score I wish I would have gotten:)

Nice day for Portland......Look at all the green on the bricks.....

Nice diag lines. I think the dark right hand side really hurt this though. Try recropping, taking out the dark right side and maybe take off the top just below the large Air conditioner. Also if this was a handheld, try this kind of shot again with a tripod and compare them. It makes a world of differance! By the way, all the colors coming from past the eatary looks VERY interesting. You might want to look at just that store from closer in.

awesome color capture

This brings back memories. Seattle has a very similar area, which has a one of the areas best Irish pubs.

fun shot - I wish the kites were closer, they look like the more interesting part of the photo

Nice DOF and colors, good shot. Kee

I'm a bit restless and bored. I want this to be a tranquil, cafe afternoon, but all the details and colors in the background are distracting me, as is the big dark foreground on the right.

This photo has a fairly warm feeling of city life :) These little backstreet places are usually quite fun and nice places to hang out. Fortunately, I have been to Portland a few times but I haven't made it on to this particular street... I am asking myself if there may not be a better framing and angle for this photo.. the dark fence on the right and the partially clipped parking sign are not major drawbacks by any means, but i think there may be room for improvement in that area of the photo :) good work! = 6 - jmsetzler

This would be a better photo if you had cropped off the fence on the right and the a/c units above them:) It's still a good city life photo !
