This is actually a pile old railroad ties and a platform that was ripped up at the Railroader's Museum. The ties here were never treated to help keep the Museum yard clean for kids, the estimated age of the musuem ties is only 20 years but because of never being treated they weathered away.

CRITIQUE CLUB CRITIQUE
by karmat

Me again. Actually, I had Club put this back in the pile so someone else could get it, then waited a day, and STILL got it. Either I am the only one doing cc's (doubtful) or it is "just meant" for me to critique this picture. Whichever way it is ----

Technically, this is a good picture. The focus is good as you can really see the texture in a lot of the areas, and the grain is visible. Sometimes it is tempting to oversharpen a shot like this, but this does not seem the case. The lighting and color tones are good as well.

Compositionally, I find myself focusing on the hicky-didge in the end of the square rail. As a result, I am wondering if perhaps, using that as your subject and getting closer wouldn't have made for a more interesting composition and more of an unanswered question. If you want to include the entire stack, I think more context is needed to really make the composition stronger.

Overall, I think you have a good idea, but it leaves me feeling a little lacking as for the "challenge." The picture is technically sound and the only thing I would really try to change is the composition.

Best to you in future challenges.

Your personal critiquer,
karmat

Nice idea, and the composition is verynice as we can see a variety of things this firewood once was.

Railroad ties? In places the detail is pretty good, but other spots seem less clear. Not a lot of contrast (needs more). It needs something to say "wow, look at me!", but there's just not much here. 7 Rob the Swash

Damn whatever it was, it was freaking old. Maybe a barn? I like the hints in the pic like the hinge in the upper right, and the S shaped support thingy on the post in the bottom right. Very good shot!!! 8.

This is a shot with some interest but without too many questions in my mind. 6 Jak
