Challenge: Singled-Out (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Nikon Coolpix 7900
Location: NY
Date: Jan 13, 2006
ISO: 100
Date Uploaded: Jan 15, 2006

Went for a walk with a friend, her daughter, and her daughters friend. I used the "shoot from the hip" method with the camera on the "sports setting" and just kept snapping a ton of shots having no idea what I was getting. I ended up with a ton of over and underexposed shots, lots of pictures of the sky and sidewalk. Lots of blurriness, crookedness and people mostly chopped off the side of the pictures. This was the ONLY picture that had any nice color to it, much less a focused person with more than 2 people in it.

There was a shadow of the swing chain right over the girls face, so I cloned that out, and I fixed a bit of peeling paint on the red swing structure. Other than that.. cropped, and added a border. I'm not expecting this to do too well, but it at least meets the criteria... group of 3 people, candid, focus on one person.

Plane of focus appears to the threes, rather than the person.

I enjoy this, however it seems that the main focus is on the tree in the background. It def. takes away from the shot some...

Overall this is a very busy image. Neither subject seems to be "singled out" and they actually both seem to be competing for attention. The nearest subject grabs your attention initially, but the focus and lighting is on your distant subject. The focus on her seems a bit soft, and she is dominated by the near subject. In short, I can't really tell who is "singled out".

This shot is not composed carefully. The body of the swinger in blue is missing a head, and the facial expression of the closest person is not interesting. It's a shame, with all these colourful lines added by the swings, this could be a more interesting composition.

She's nicely pinged out, it's a pity you couldn't get a shallower DOF with it ... or perhaps highlighted the girl in the middle
