**** Post Challenge *****

Thank you so much everyone who is telling me how nice this is... though I know that the color cast hurt it badly in the scoring.

I'll give the basic run-down of how this double exposure was accomplished here, and make a thread with outtakes and all a little later tonight.
First off, thanks to my bestfriend-husband who was MORE than patient during this whirlwind-half-hour-before-deadline shoot.

Oh, and I should say that the painting is a mural I painted in my kitchen dinette. It wasnt meant to be a fake garden background, it just happened to be a convenient means of having something "to show through" that wasnt terribly busy. Origionally I used the kitchen table and a chair, but scrapped it for just my utility stool for composition sake.

In any case - the hardest part of this shoot was trying not to hit the threads holding up the camera on the way to getting behind the lens.

1) String up the camera from the ceiling. Basically there are two threads run from behind my head in the photo to over the camera. The old Minolta in the photo is hung from its strap loops over the two threads. The camera has been in its case since 1968, so the strap had no bend to it at all. I couldnt have changed those loops if I had tried.

2) Blackout the room, set up assisting partner with handheld flash and armreach to the pantry lights (flourescent tubes) wich are to the left of the camera. Wait till camera stops swaying. Turn on pantry light. Hit shutter set at 30 second exposure.

3) Flash strobe at +1.5 without me in the photo, turn off pantry light.

4) In darkened room, scuttle CAREFULLY into photo behind the dangling camera wearing light colored shirt, turn on pantry lights and hold for 3 count and flash strobe again. Kill pantry lights. Scuttle out of picture slowly trying to stir as little air as possible.

5) Turn pantry lights back on until shutter releases.

That was it! Then it was OH CRUD I ONLY HAVE 10 MINUTES to EDIT! Had I more time, I would have corrected that wierd purple/yellow cast going on along the wall from the combination of flourescent tubes and flash.

Ok I had to give you a 9, this is an awesome idea and great shot. I think all photographers have probably had a fantasy like this. This was one of the most original ideas that I saw during the challenge.

The photography itself struck me as though you were trying to give it more of an old fashion look based on the colors. I think including the background was important otherwise I personally think the image would have lost some of the depth. The composition is very nice and complete there is no empty space and the shot doesn't feel crowded. I also like how the straps looks so prefect, guess they were stored just right.

I really think you did excellent and work and if you had more time to edit you would have had the shot just they way you wanted. But hey 18th place still isn't too bad. Good work!

This is so cool! I missed it during the challenge, would have given it a high score for sure.

Yakatme is being diplomatic, I can't be, you were robbed this should have won. I gave you a 10 and anyone who didn't understand the originality of this image and the excellent way you pulled it off, shouldn't be voting. Another picture which proves what I have been saying about people voting on DPC, there is no accounting for taste.

Looks like something that one would see on the inside of a romance novel....like a 1800's ghost coming through the wall! WOW!

A lot of nice comments down below, but what happened? This should have scored a lot higher (I voted it a 9). I have an idea of how you pulled this off, but i'd like the details.

The color cast is somewhat distracting - it's too white to feel like a faded or antique photo, and too far off white to feel properly white balanced. I like the concept, but the flowers and the stool make this feel a lot cheesier than it would if it were taken with a shallow DoF outside with a blurry environmental scene as the backdrop.

The colors really work - nice tonal quality... a great fantasy.. especially for photographers... the chair balances the image

Interesting concept...however the color is very unappealing to me. Also there is too much unnecessary empty space at the top.
