Specially trained reindeer for pulling sleighs. It takes about four years to train them. As a calf the learn how it feels to have a rope around their neck. After that they add more and more until they have a sleigh behind them with people in it. It is very unnatural for them and they don't like people at all. That's why it takes so long.
A sleigh reindeer is a lucky reindeer. It gets fed and is better looked after. The natural ones are looked after as well, but in the end they grind their teeth to pieces on the rock. That's when the Lappi kill them. This might seem hard, but without its teeth the reindeer will die of starvation.

Vegetarians close your eyes:
Reindeer flesh tastes excellent. :) You must see them as cows. In Holland we have cows and no problem with steak on our menu. The reindeer is the arctic cow.

Saw some of these special reindeer last summer here for the Finlandia festival that is held every year in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We have a lot of migrant Finnish here that came when the mines started up.

Beautiful shot!
