I want to answer a few comments, but first, thanks to everyone, and I took nothing personally:

My daughter was not injured or choked during the making of this, nor was it "posed". This scarf is one my her favorite playthings. I first tried taking photo of her sitting in a chair with this, but it did not really work.

I put her on our bed, on a dark green blanket. And I asked for her help (sounds more like hop in her language). I laid her on the bed, and covered her in it, and just let her play. I had to do this several times, shooting hand held at 1/50th, and I got about 3 good shots out of 25 or so.

The other ones actually look a lot like chiffon dream. My wife and I thought this would have more universal appeal. BTW: it makes a nice 8x10.

I was really worried about this being trashed for being a baby picture, but it wasn't. Thanks.

I love the expression. It looks like someone got caught playing with something they shouldn't have.

a pink flower on the left of her head would match nicely

Absolutely the best stuff here. The subject..the wonderful taffeta and colors. A theme I would love to shoot myself if only I could find a subject this nice :-) One of my 10 best this week .. hokie

I hope she got a happy meal after you put her through that! What an adorable subject and the expression on her face is priceless.

What an adorable child. For some reason this makes me think...why would you do that? Great colors and image quality...but that question keeps bugging me. 7

I'm starting to agree with Iban about babies and kids. Still...they're cute. Anyways-my eye goes straight to the exposed hair, and I don't like that; completely covering the face would've been better, or cropping more severly to the left. the way the face ends up floating is nice.

cool but that stare is a little creepy.

creative 3 interesting 2 focus 9 framing 6 = 5 This photo is really freaky for some reason. I know it is probably your kid and all, but there is something about it that really bothers me. I don't know. Please don't take it to personal.

cute kid :) = 5 - jmsetzler

Qualification:

I apologize for the blount comment with the score... i rate photos at a 5 that are 'average' in my mind... now.. what would make this portrait better than average?

1. The pink linen doesn't appear natural to me and it gives me the slight impression that she is being choked by it.
2. i think you are a little close to the subject. I would like to either see a little more breathing room or a little less pink linen.
3. I believe that some vertical wrinkles in the linen would create some nice shadows on her face and would allow some more interesting dispersion of the light in this shot.
4. I personally prefer lighting from a side angle for portrait shots.. about 45 degrees off center.

You did a great job with the catch lighting in her eyes... this is a very important element of a nice portrait shot :)

Please don't take these critiques personally. I was sincere with the 'cute kid' remark. Ms Susan is a cutie for sure :) She's lucky to have a dad that enjoys taking pictures... she will appreciate all of these one day for sure :)
