I learned a few things by looking at this shot and reading the comments. You have comments from some very knowlegable people. I really like these daily life, journalistic type shots. Especially in B/W. |

From the Critique Club:
I wanna start off by saying that this is my favorite type of shot to critique and I'm glad I pulled it from the queue. What do I mean by this? It may not be the most excellent shot, but there is so much potential there that I have to stop and look again!
This critique begs for my what I like and what I don't like format...
What I like! You captured an incredible moment in time. The look on the gentlemans face is priceless! He has an incredible pride in what he does and it shows in his expression and your capture. He also has incredible character. I love the taped together glasses and his wonderful grin. There are layers of great texture and leading lines in this shot. The texture is in the eggs and egg crating. The lines are there both in the eggs and the space that they are displayed. You obviously used a wide angle lens. This is apparent in the overall feel of the shot. Not having seen the original, I would say that your choice to go b/w is a good one but I can't be 100 percent on that point.
What I don't like. This is a bit harder. Everything in the crop left of the post on the left third line is unneeded. It distracts and detracts from the shot. A lot of that portion of the shot is blown out which doesn't help anything... You shot is a touch skewed. It's not level. A little more skewed and it would look artsy. The way it is now looks like you didn't take time to straighten the shot in camera. Looks a little sloppy. You are a touch soft here. Most times I like soft focus, but this looks more like it is OOF or your focal point is in the wrong place. I may be wrong on this issue but without seeing a full sized original I can't tell. You lose your subjects left (right in image) elbow in the shadows of the background. The subjects dark clothing against the dark background is a bit of a distraction.
I truly like this shot. I like the overall compostion minus the left side of the frame. I love the character of the subject. I love the textures. If I was you, I would see if he would let me shoot him again. It may take a couple of tries, but I see an potential award winning shot here. Please, keep shooting! If you go back and shoot this subject again, PLEASE post your results here! I will be watching for it.
Yours

This is a great photo :)
I love all the eggs, but maybe crop tighter, eliminating the car and street, which look really blown out and distracting. Maybe from...the middle of the closest egg tray to his farthest elbow on the right?
It would prolly focus the shot more on him. He is amazing :)

Is it just me or is there distortion to the picture? Were you shooting at 10mm? The worst seems to be in the upper right which is also where our subject's face is. It makes the picture fairly soft as well. The lighting on the subject is well done and the contrast is probably the best you could do with the large black patch and the large bright patch in the background. If they weren't there, I would have tried to bump the contrast even more for the foreground and subject. Photojournalism doesn't always fly on this site, so I wouldn't be too disapointed. |

I hope you see my comment as constructive and helpful :)
First off, the focus is a bit soft. It almost looks as if you ran this through NI several times specially since you were shooting at such a high ISO. The left side has far too much blown highlights for voters to overlook. The image is so smooth overall that there isn't much contrast and texture to hold a viewer in place.
I love these types of shots. I have a few of then actually. What makes photo-journalistic type shots effective is good DOF and textures ;)
I hope I could help in any way.
Cheers,
Rikki |

I think this could have done a lot better if his face was in focus and the post on his right had been the side of the picture. The white space is annoying and distracting. Very sute though. |

I really like this. The wide angle is great and Harry looks like an interesting character. The only thing is, the focus seems to be on the eggs and not on Harry. |

Now, this is a photo that belongs in black and white, you really seemed to catch Harry's personality. |

Man this is awesome. I just wish the distortion is less visible. |

Could do with darker shadow tones, but a nice documentary portrait. I'd have made more of the eggs in the foreground and avoided the overexposed background to the left by repositioning myself. Shame it's not sharper. |

very nice shot where the interest lies, on the man and his eggs, but the blown highlights outside the tent are very distracting, a bit of cropping would serve this shot well.7 |

Too much was put into the comp. You need to simplify. Focusing on the egg shapes and Harry would have made a tighter comp. Contrast is good, and the emotive quality of Harry is very endearing. Anyway, the background left in made the image too busy. Still I give it a 7 |

Harry looks like a cool guy. Getting his face in focus as well as the eggs would have helped this shot. |

Harry is brilliant! The photograph initially appears very busy, even jumbled, but it is actually composed and executed with great skill and subtlety. The combination of light, lines and exposure is terrific, and the photograph works very smoothly and confidently. It's a really fine street photograph, and one of the few of that genre that is all the better for a bit of impromptu "posing" of the subject. 8. |

good job of capturing real life! your subject and the setting are really unique! however, there seems to be a lot of grayish areas in the middle, which reduces detail. very overexposed white areas in the sky. if it's very bright outside and you're shooting under a tent, try some test runs to see which settings are the most flattering, especially for your subject. |
