During the 70's, lava lamps were all the rage. Now, many retailers are trying to sell them again to consumers, so since this was a 'trend' that lives on, I felt it a suitable subject to take a photo of.

Hi Wes, from critique club.

Well I meant what i said that it was the best of the lava shots - unfortunately you fell into the common subject hole. It obviously meets the challenge perfectly.

The deformation of the image is a problem: at least for me. It looks like you've got very close to the nearest lamp, and that's added the lens distortion to the further one. If you shoot from further away, this becomes less of a problem - use the zoom! besides that - colour is excellent, focus is fine, and the moment you've captured is a great illustration of the process of the lamp - so no problems there.

As to the final score - and 57th place ... I think that's about right really; there's nothing inspired about it from the lighting or subject angle, and placing higher would be too much to hope. Ideas to get it to do better? I think I'd have tried to light the outside of the lamp a little (difficult, but probably worth it), to give some shape to the image as well as the creepiness of the lava.

Good luck in future

Best lava-lamp shot so far: unfortunately that isn't saying much.

I tried this for "Round". You did a little better than I was able to. One tip on lessening or eliminating those jaggies at the edge of the lamp: try resizing in steps. Instead of going straight from the full image down to 640x480 (or whatever), resize at about 10% increments. It works great most times.

This was my original idea...but abandoned it when ran out of possible scenarios..
