 This is my son and daughters walking through City Hall Park adjacent to the Kennedy Plaza bus terminal. My son had arrived home from visiting his girlfriend in South Carolina. His bus was nearly an hour late and the Plaza was freezing. Downcity Providence is a bit of a wind tunnel and this was a particularly cold day. I took lots of photos while we waited. I like this one for the quality of the late afternoon light and the lovely view of the little park which was designed to showcase the fountain by Enid Yandell which was commissioned in 1901 by Italian diplomat, Paul Bajnotti as a memorial to his wife Carrie Brown, a native Rhode Islander. I thought the square crop worked well for this image because of distant central position of the fountain offset by the placement of the benches and the figures of my children. I'm not sure if I'm articulating my thoughts well but there it is.
Aside from cropping I did a small amount of dodging of highlights to emphasize the dappling of the light. In camera I used an EV value of -1.0.

I think your comp needs to be shifted over to the right to put that bench and light more towards the edge of your image.

I don't think this image works well in a square crop - it seems to me to cry out for a portrait framing, so that the seat and lampost balance the two figures; so you've made it fit the challenge by forcing a sqaure crop on an image, rathr than finding an image that works in square. There are strong elements here - the mottled light and the textures of the seat could be interesting, but to my eye it isn't effective in the required format.
