I'll probably get low votes for entering a sunset photo for the fear challenge, but this was the most interesting photo I had this week. I took this in Woodlawn Cemetery on 4 July, as I was walking to the local fireworks display with a friend. I liked the ambiguous title and also the play on the word "son" vs "sun". I see several "fear" themes possible here, not sure if others will see them or not!

Thanks for your comments! Thought I'd add several of my possible interpretations of this image, since there was some confusion as to how this image might represent Fear. My original fear idea was to show someone taking a shortcut through the cemetery, just as it was getting dark. While taking test photographs in the cemetery on the Fourth of July, I took this photo (wayward son).

I loved the color of the sky in the photo and the position of the setting sun, but could this be a fear entry? Then I thought about the possible title wayward son and liked the many interpretations this presented. [Disclaimer: none of these interpretations represent my personal views on religion.]

1. The original idea still works, although not obvious. Someone's son (the face on the left) is taking a shortcut through the cemetery, and looks up to see the setting sun. Maybe they are thinking Oh no, I better hurry home before it is dark!.

2. I think many people found a more symbolic interpretation. Someone is fearful that their son (the face on the left) is turning away from religion (they are facing the cross, but the sun is setting on this image -- i.e., they are losing their faith).

Although it has nothing to do with fear, I also liked the play on the word son. The face on the left could represent someone's son, the cross represents the Son of God, and the sun is setting on the right -- three representations of son/sun -- parallel the idea of trinity in Christian religion? (ok, now I'm stretching.....) ;-)

nice shot! nice lighting and contrast.
but IMHO the face is distracting. i think the photo would be really cool without it. (nothing personal to the person ;-)

Really nice shot... I'm guessing some folks will say you didn't meet the challenge, but I think you did. It has a definite eery feel to it.

I'm afraid I don't understand this one. I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt on fitting the theme and rating on your execution, which is very good. I'd love an explanation of this after the challenge.

lovely sunset but a bit symbolic

I think this is my favorite photo in this challenge. I love the lighting and the sun peeking out from behind the tree. The gradient color in the sky adds a really nice touch to this image as well.. I love the silhouette o fhe face on the left... great shot! = 10 - jmsetzler

Technically a great photo...love the silohuettes and colors of the setting/rising sun. But, the fear isn't really there for me...looks more like regret...maybe defiance? I think if the trees were bare or more scraggly there would be more of an element of fear here. I may have cropped wider to show the person's upper body posture and to not have the silohuette of his body cut off on one side. I7 Lisa

This seems to be the more close interpretation of fear

meeting challange = 4 this is almost a more peaceful, serene shot for me. Photo quality = 5 I think it might have been better without the person in it - just the cross? total = 9

This is a great shot. I go back and forth on weather I like the face on the left or not. I think I would like the over-all picture better without it, but it probably works better for the challenge.

Great picture, great composition

Nice idea. The expression of the guy simply doesn't match to the topic -may be it was the angle-

nice composition!

Yes, that's a great fear.

I classify this as yet another really good one. I would have liked just a bit more contrast to make the face pop out more, but even so it is very good. The composition works well for me though it could be a little tighter taking some from the top and the right.

I like it

I love this picture but I see nothing to fear at all. When you come to the cross you find mercy! But then again, I guess it would be scary in the end if you haven't come humbly. itsbygrayce@yahoo.com I'd score you higher but one must read the title to get the message. The pic should do that. 8
