 Window light, early in the morning.

Post processing - convert to black and white, levels, a series of curves adjustments, crop, USM.

I think some will find this oversharpened, but I liked the way it brought out the details of his skin. I wish I could burn the highlights along his nose a bit. This challenge was really hard to do in basic editing :)

I think it might even make more impact with less light great though nice depth of field

A perfect photo for the self portrait in your profile on this web site, I think it somewhat risky as a competive entry IMO.

Wow... what a beautiflly done portrait. Great lighting, great angle, superior tonality. This is one of the very best images in the challenge. If there one thing that you might try it would be to shot it at an f/stop or so narrower to get a little more depth of field so that the beard is in a little more clearer focus but still narrow enough for a good background blur.
