We visited my wife's Grandma (my new grand daughter's "great great Grandma") in her home in order to create a 5-Generation portrait, from great great grandma all the way down to my grand daughter.

While we were there, I talked with her a bit. She had just turned 90 years old. I explained to her that if I wanted to create a portrait of her son, who builds pipe organs for a living, I would visit him in his shop and try to capture an image that would portay him in his natural environment.

So I asked what it is that she likes to do. And she explained how she just loves doing genealogy.

And so, while she had just cleaned up all of her papers (in order for the house not to be messy when we came by for the 5-generation portrait), she did not want to have to get the papers out and spread them out again. However, she was willing to pose while she glanced through one of her many many Books of Remembrance.

Shot using natural light with a reflector off to camera-right.

I think you captured this scene about as well as anyone could. The exposure and colors certainly look great to me. The composition isn't half bad either, although I think there is a little room for improvement. I think the real photo is in the look on the woman's face, so accentuating that would probably make the image more compelling. A more dramatic lighting setup, a simpler setting, or even just a tighter crop on the woman might improve the shot considerably.

Wow, stunning portrait David. You have done a great job capturing her charming personality. I would say that the lamp right behind her head is a bit distracting but not a big deal.
