Thank you Alice for the critique!

Greetings from the Critique Club

I remember this image when it won a ribbon a while back and it still brings a smile. So, it was fun to examine your emulation to see how close you came.

I'm not going to dwell on the focusing; you've obviously had enough comments on that. Tripod & bracketing are my only suggestions (and you probably did all that).

But the lighting also comes into play in this fun photo. Froglet made her image seem warm, friendly and sort of mischievous through the use of warm lighting behind the wall, where you went for the harsher lighting associated with black & white. Not good or bad, just different. And - maybe - voters were attracted more to the warmth of the original... Who knows?

What really counts is that you obviously had fun making this image and that you learned from it.

Keep up the good work.

It obviously wasn't as good as the original but I tried! After I took a bunch of shots and then put all the cubes back (mistake!) I realized all my shots had the front cube out of focus. I knew this was a major mistake but I loved your original and concept was fun. Harder than it looks. ;)

Thank you for honouring me with this !!! I like the black & white, a shame the foreground cube wasn't more in focus, but nice try ! (and for those commenters below who don't know the original, here it is : //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=181228)

Nice shot. DOF is a little shallow. Would have been nice if the front cube was in focus too!

I've seen this picture years ago. Its either a ripoff or a duplicate.

I can't find where this was a ribbon winning pic ... it was top 20 though.

DOF is too small... the pile shoud've been in focus, too

DOF is a little too shallow for this shot.

Although I don't know the photo that you're emulating, I do wish the cube in the foreground was also in focus...

you should have focused on the sugar cude in the front as well.
