I have always liked the way light plays with everyday objects. Here, a doorknob the morning after the challenge was announced. It caught my eye...I took two quick shots...this is the one that was in focus.
I chased around all week looking for prisms and thinking about how refraction works and trying to find single point light sources. My efforts resulted in dead ends and frustration...but I never lost my enthusiasm for the scientific principle renewed in my mind. In the end, I thought there must be something better, more meaningful, and remembered this shot.
Things I did to the image: flipped horizontal so a right-handed person could reach for this door knob. Desaturated all but red and yellow--those I shifted and lightened. Applied levels. Sharpened. I had forgotten how to work within the basic editing rules...that forced me to spend time trying to find the effect I wanted.
This is not a typical DPC ribbon-range photo. I don't care. Of course I hope it will score well...but I'm learning to see the world my way again and that's what's most important to me.
When I look at this image I see the play of light, the humor of home improvements made when I first bought this house, the juxtaposition of ornament and age...life. I see a moment that made me think, "Ah! That's what being alive means...seeing beauty in the mundane."
I will leave this house soon. This is a piece of it that I will carry with me and, at the same time, leave behind for the next person to discover...an odd legacy, don't you think? |

I really like this one. It's different from the expected wine glasses, and I love the composition and textures. Your colouring works perfectly with it, as does your title. |
