Helen,
Greetings from the Critique Club!
First impression: This is definitively not a setup shot. (Does not look like it is - and that is important for the candid challenge where some of the shots sometimes appear staged.) Your subjects obviously have something else to worry about/to pay attention to, rather than looking at you photographing them.
Composition: I am still struggling with it: I like the tilted scene, that's not for grabs. However, I am not sure if I like the fact that they are looking at something outside the frame or not. My first reaction was "this is cool, the photographer is leading us to think about the photo, leaving to our imagination what could be here to the right of the frame?" On the other hand, the facial expressions are of little curiosity, so I realize slowly that it must not be that interesting after all. I almost wish that you brought that person (guy) that is not staring to his left more into the image. His disinterested posture would have strengthened this photo IMO.
Technicals: I've read in your profile that you enjoy processing your photos this way. It gives the image a newspaper-ish looks, and I like it for the candid type of shot like this one. b&w definitively works well here for me.
To score higher than it did: Make the scene more interesting to the dpc crowd (whatever that means though). One thing would have been to isolate one or two persons from this group and try to introduce some interest for wide audience, either by shooting wide open (to have only one person in focus) or otherwise create a photo that draws viewer's attention to something that they will vividly remember and be able to talk about this photo rationally.
Summary: An overall nice photo. Probably scored a bit lower than it could have, although it would have been very hard to have it scored over 5.5. I would have given this a 6 (haven't voted on this challenge)
I am trying to do my best giving an honest critique - if you have any questions on this critique or if you disagree please feel free to PM or email me.
Best regards,
-Serge

I think there's a little too much going on in the picture. I don't know what to focus on. |

I'm not much for receiving or giving comments, but since Candids are near and dear to my heart, I have decided to give comment on every entry in this challenge.
The title pretty much says it all. They aren't looking, but even without looking they are showing very little emotion. There is really no story, emotion, or anything unexpected or wowing about this photo to me. The titled photos also never do anything for me. I do like the tones. I gave it a 3. |

I like this, though the blacks are so dark that there's no definition. Though that might be your intention.. :) |
