Quite like this shot. I actually like the DOF. Not too shallow to be distracting but enough to be effective. I think a problem might have been in the lighting: I'm familiar iwth the effect that you were going for but I don't think that it eventuated as you had invisioned. However, had I voted, I would have given this a 6, so I think that 4.7 is a bit harsh! Maybe people didn't get the something old thing....not sure.

I like what you're doing here, but the expressed diagonal is a weak one to my eyes. The photo has almost as much sense of horizontal division as it does of diagonal division; that is to say, you vae a lot of forgeround out of play and relatively little BG out of play. It also needs more DOF to work, I think; it's frustrating how those precise lines & numbers are not quite there. Makign shots like this, I do a LOT of variations both of positioning and DOF in order to find the most pleasign combination.

Great idea for OLD. At least the title would have told some of the young'uns what this is. I love slide rules! Now if only I could remember how to use one. I really like the lighting on this. I would have liked to see a little stronger focus on the middle of the slide rule.

Feels like it could have been sharper. I wonder if, rather than a "product shot", something more along the lines of an old man USING the slide rule might have made it more interesting? (i.e. tell a story, don't just present the slide rule as an image)

Hi! Hereâs a comment from the Critique Club.

First Impression:
My eyes were drawn to the screw head. Nice spot light effect. Not much in focus!

Composition:
I like the diagonal line created. The black background works well with the yellow.

Subject:
Meets challenge. I used a slide rule in the obsolete challenge! May not have met the âLooks Oldâ criteria that I think some of the voters were looking for.

Technical:
Lighting is good. DOF really shallow. I would have liked to have seen much more in focus. The amount of image out of focus really takes away from the picture.

Summary:
Nice picture and set up. Shallow DOF and not âLooking Oldâ probably worked against you. It would be nice to see you redo this with more DOF.

Nice with the spotlight! This looks like a stock shot - the shadow adds interest. (hey, and aren't these complementary colors, too?!) Good job.
