I am not sure I can do as well as you did for me by way of comments ("Return to Civil War?" in photojournialism) but I thought I at least owed a shout.
First, I think your score for this shot is absurd. I would give it at least a 8 or 9. Here's what I like:
The painterly feel and monotone colors work exceptionally well. It is surreal but not impossible. Warm shapes and cool colors work well as contrast for me. The simplicity of only one subject also works well.
I would try with even less focus on the foreground flower to see if that let's the entire image take on a painterly feeling. What if it is all a blur and the color and shapes become the entire subject. I have been playing with blurred images to make color the subject and occassionally enjoyed the result. My only other thought would have been to clip away the closed flower.
Overall works very well for me.

I would have centered the dafodil a little more, or cropped off the top. Cool idea though. |

I've woken up blue myself, now and then. It usually is a negative experience. |

Not bad but a bit too bright after the invert, wish the original image had been brighter before you inverted it. |

I like the repeating pattern, the dust spots (if they are dust spots) are off putting. Otherwise a nice simple negative image |
