Greetings from the Critique Club

My first impression of this image is that it's blurry and the lighting is harsh. There are a few things that hurt this image aside from the fact that it isn't in focus. They are composition, subject and DOF used. The lighting here is too bright as seen in the blown highlights on the fly's wings. A fly in itself is not a bad subject to begin with but when it's shot in full macro that is. An ordinary fly composed this way just seems a run of the mill image that seemed like it was just taken for the sake of entering a shot. I think improvement lies in the way the fly is presented. The violet petal on the right doesn't add to the overall composition. I do like the fact that the textures are present and that the leaf shows the fine "hairs" iof you will. The color of the subject is great and adds interest to an overall green hue of the image. While the violet adds a falir of color, it doesn't add much to the composition.

I hope you see this as a way to improve your image and not as a critique to pull you down. You have some great images in your portfolio and since this is your first try at bugs, I would suggest practicing more so that you can improve on your mistakes. If you can catch the fly, so much the better so that you can position him for a better view.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about shooting macros. Although I have no experience shooting bugs, I do have some interesting macro shots that I can share details with you. Here's looking forward to more images from you Deborah ;)

Cheers,

Rikki

Hey there -

This isn't a bad idea, but cropping such a small area from such a large photo rarely works out for the better. The quality just isn't there. Moreover, the light is rather harsh, so toning it down and adding some warmer tones helps a lot. Finally, the subject is just rather blah. DPC is kinda overloaded on so-so flower shots at the moment and the magenta bloom in the photo looks rather sickly.

For what it's worth, here's my workshop. More than anything else I tried to just clean up the house fly. All my steps are listed there. FWIW, the demo version of Neat Image is a free download if you don't already have it.

EDIT: The thumbnail button doesn't seem to want to work here.. I'll try posting it on your topic, and if it doesn't like that either, then look in my portfolio under the Workshop folder. ;-)

Love the texture you have achieved with this one. A little noise but doesn't distract from the composition. Well done.

Appears over sharpened and too strong of lighting. Good colors in the fly

Grainy & the harsh sunlight is not helping the image any.

Too much "texturised" to look real.
The shadows are very strong, it was maybe a bright sunny moment.
A rotate version (90 CW) gives an interesting view imo.
The colors are nice.

Great textures. The purple is really striking. I think you could have made a nice image without even including the fly. Just the contrast between the shapes of the purple and green is really nice.
