I don't hold much hope for this photo since voters will probably want to see the opposite of what is displayed here (i.e. not happy images). Also, this one is pretty colorful however I think this would make for a good magazine photo, hence why I entered it. Hopefully, people will read the descriptions. :)

As for the photo itself, I thought it summed up everything about the event and Austin in general. People had a blast and the weather was fantastic. The fact that Austin is quite "out there" I thought having that big sky in the shot was perfect. So here's to "Keeping Austin Weird"!

*Post*

Well people didn't get it I guess. Some mentioned to move the people off-center while others said the negative space wasn't something you'd see in photojournalism. Umm ok. Actually "negative space" was there because it was news worthy as in "not raining", besides it is typically found in a lot of news magazines I've read. The night before it was raining quite a lot and the event was almost cancelled. Oh well I thought this was a really cool shot that met the challenge.

Disclaimer:
The following crits are personal opinions, not photographic dogmas. Please see them as suggestions, not claims of mastery nor a show of hauteur.;p

First Impression: Now this I like. Even more than elephants.XD A 9, because it's more fun than elephants and circuses, which dominate fun charts.
Composition: To heck with the rules of composition, this composition WORKS for the photo. 8!
Subject: Funky subjects who look like hippies are cool. 10.
Technical: 8. Sharpness's fine, colors rule, contrast rocks, but shadows poop.
Improvement: Fill-in flash and flying ninjas.
Summary: Since you're last on the list, you're my last "critiquee". Thanks for capping off my critiquing session with fun. I'm a number too short on screws in the head so please do not be offended.;p

In regards to the composition I felt this was the best one available to me. I wanted to get the sky in the shot but also to minimize what was behind them which was a blue tent, a trailer and other cluttered stuff. Since they too were "cluttered" in costume gear I thought the photo would have been way too busy to include that background. This one offered a much cleaner image and I thought visually it told how the day went better than anything else I shot. Thanks everyone for the comments!

Comment from a member of your own commenting club :-)
This is a very happy picture. Love happy pictures.
What is good?:
1. You captured a happy moment :-)
2. Great colours
3. Good focus.
What could be better?
1. The cropping. I would like to see more of the colourful persons and less of the sky.
2. You could have made the guys bigger.

Hope this helps.

Hey, yanko. I liked this shot. It was fun and colorful and I believe was a good choice for the challenge.

Compositionally, it's not a "normal" PJ style, but it works for you. I think the blue sky, tells a lot about this being a sunny, fun-filled event.

Colors are vivrant and eye-catching.

I do think a bit of fill-flash would have added a bit of extra pop to the image, because we are looking at some harsh shadows on the faces. That's not untypical in photojournalism, but is a bit of a no-no on this site (as you know).

Overall, I thought you did a good job at capturing a fun event. This definitely works for me in the Lifestyles section of a local paper.

Funny shot. I've read your comment, and I had some opinions about negative space as you. If you think of it, maybe they are right. But it's important you like it. Anyway, here goes my critique:
Composition: I think it's OK, but maybe the subject is too small in the photo. It's a bit strange to see this people without knowing where they are, what is the context of the photo. The moment you captured is quite funny.
Colors: wonderfully bright and saturated. Like them.
To improve: maybe put the subject in the context.
Good job and keep shooting.

Ãlex.

Nice bright colors. I love the clouds/sky, but I'm not a huge fan of too much 'empty' space. I would have liked to see more of the people. The cut off elbos bugs me a bit. Maybe framed so that all you see as the background is sky, still, but with more of th people? Shot from really low maybe? Just a thought. I love the expressions on their faces - it looks like they are having a blast. The colors are great, and exposure is good. Maybe a little fill flash to even out the shadows on their faces? Overall, this is a really bright, fun photo. Makes me want to visit Austin again.

less sky more people!
nice colors, could use fill flash if you were close enough to kill the crazy shadows on the face.

Good composition, but I would not expect a newspaper to run a photo with this much negative space.

Nice idea but too much sky in the photo and it does not seem in context.

I thought about going, but drove out to the country instead. Cute capture. I'd like to see them a bit less centered. Great colors - love the sky.
