Hey there from the Critique Club

Camera Work/Technical: Very nice focus on a live subject and a slow shutter speed. I also like your depth of field use that works nicely with the lighting to isolate the subject from the background.

Lighting: Terrific! I am assuming that there was some fill flash used here, and it worked perfectly. It is just the right amount to really make him jump off the page without blowing out any highlights. This is often very difficult, especially with light clothing. You knocked it out with no problem.

Composition/Content: Very nice, as well. The subject draws the most attention, but the shoreline works well to direct the viewer's eye back to the dejected subject.

My Opinion: I like this one. I like the dejected feeling that is obviously portrayed by his expression alone. Great mood, but to really understand the photograph, the viewer has to read the comments. Just remember that the comments are not viewable until voting for the challenge is over. Welcome to DPC and the over-use of the update link. 5.2 is a great start, and I look forward to many more of your images to critique.

In the future, as a photographer, you must have forthought to what you are trying to sell the viewer.

Just like dating, first impressions are everything. Next, you have to convince the viewer to take a second look.

Convinceing the viewer is everything, else the image is lost.

In this image, a surf board, or wave board, or boogie board, hell, even a swim suit would of faired better than nothing. Think props.

Don't give up.

Okay, ya got me, I looked up "Surfless" in the dictionary, thought I would learn a new word ... duh.

The composition (with the model in the right side) looks good to me! It's generally more effective (for portraits) to have the subject make some kind of eye contact with the camera/viewer.

Nice shot, lighting is a bit harsh though and I would like to see this with more contrast but taken at the right time of day. Well composed, got a 6 from me.

nice emotive shot! maybe for me it needs the background to be livened up. Then again it wouldnt match his somber mood? (7)

The flash is too strong.

He's not dressed for surfing. The photo doesn't meet the title.

I don't get it. Is he a surfer? If so, where is his board?
