From the Critique Club:
This shot overall is very nice. I'm torn about the lighting though. At first I thought that it was kinda cool that it was such a dark shot, but the more I look at it the more I think it's too dark.
Technicals: Very nice focus. Very nice colors. Very nice DOF. Exposure seems to be off. The shot is just dark. If this is what you were aiming for you hit the mark. Does it work? That is another question. Were you trying to seperate the subject from the background through darkening of the background? If so you did it. However, it doesn't look right. It looks like it was post processed that way and if you can tell it was pp'ed a certain way, IMHO you failed. Kinda like if you can taste one ingrediant in chili...
I would love to be able to see the original of this.
Yours

Suffered from the hat shadow. :( Other than lighting issues, this could easily have been a contender. Well done! |

I wish you'd softened your flash just a little, which would have reduced or negated that shadow across his forehead. Fill-flash is absolutely right here, fo course - allowing you to make use of the natural contrast of that heavy sunlight. |

the background seems a bit dark, might be my monitor but if it were a bit lighter it would enhance his environment-6- great sharpness on the cowboy in foreground. |

This is one powerful image. Your lighting on your subject is technically excellent as you've got under the hat and shown all of the face. I do like the way that you have darked off the background. It's unnatural but a really good visual effect that doesn't detract from the result but enhances it. You do have a halo around his right shoulder where the mask is and that might cost you a point or two in the voting. |

Use a fill flash, get that shadow out of his face, distracting. |

Man, I love this. I wish his eyes weren't in shadow, but I still like the whole story this tells. |
