Hello from the Critique Club, I'm Jon Rowe, and I will be looking at your image today :)
What a great challenge overall this was. This image was a great addition to the other many wonder submissions. I like this photo for several reasons. I love the character you were able to get out of the smoke, it's not dull and boring like a lot of other smoke shots. This one ads that extra "oomf" to it, if that makes sense. the flawless black background is great as well, very nice job.
the thing that doesn't really work well for me is the blown out highlights where your flash/lights were bouncing off the luster of the iron. in an instance like this, maybe using a ND filter or even a polarizing filter could help get the glare off. i've tried a few of these type shots w/ my XT, and it really helps get the luster off, even in low light, w/ my polarizer. just an idea.
great job though on this, not a bad score at all, very nice. keep on shooting. this will make a nice addition to your already great portfolio.
take care and good luck on your future challenges :)

Very hot soldering gun. That solder sure burns when it spatters on you doesn't it? |

Nice clarity on the smoke. Nice lighting. Would have liked a little less of the soldering iron in the pic. 7 |

A red tip on the soldering iron would have clinched the deal. Otherwise it is, as you say, just smoking. |

I like the smoke, but the metal seems to get a lot of direct light and has blown outs which can be improve if you keep the light from a side.. |
