Dear All,
Thanks for your critiques, but unfortunately for me i did not have the patience to focus one is because of the poor lighting and secondly the next few pics after this one are technically very good but they have not got the expression i wanted to share with all.

regards,
Bhanu

::: Critique Club :::

Hi, my name is Kari and from the critique club.

Interesting to read the comments you have recieved ... they are helpful from what I see .. if you feel they are helpful please tick the box so that the person making them knows that.

There are some interesting personal opinions in these comments .. and it is up to you what you take on board .. ... alll critiques are of course personal opinion ... choose to use the information as you like.

First Impression - the most important one:
Interesting shot ... I want a bit more ... something more of the story in the picture.

Composition:
The picture is very centred around the childs face. have a try at google and enter ' rule of thirds' this is a really good starting rule to learn ... I found that it has helped take me from very basic and centred shots to thinking about the composition more and what else the viewer needs to see to balance a shot.

Subject:
Every child is a success story to their parent ... success is also a self determed thing .. ones success may be anothers failure ... your success is great though.

Technical (Colour and light):
The focus is not good ... it is not too bad in the thumbnail .. but people vote on the larger image. the catchlights in her eyes are lovely though ... this is a good thing ....

To grow its vote?:
Working on getting things focused helps ... this in itself is a skill ... trust me I am still good at unfocused shots .. but I have learnt not to enter them as this is something that gets scored badly. This is a pretty picture .. but people do look for a story in picture .. maybe in her mothers arms that would have told a story a little better.

Summary:
You did ok ... you are going to do better and improve ... keep shooting and this will come naturally.

If you've got any questions about this critique, please feel free to contact me via
the PM system.

Cheers

Kari

I want to tell you a bit about how I score a photo.. of course, does it meet the challenge.... does it tell a stroy... does it hold my interest?... then I go to the technical parts of it...... let's go to this shot that does not deserve to be in last place...... this shot tells me a story..... an indepth story about a baby that is so loved.... this precious child is smiling..... it is being photographed by ppl who love it..... lovely skin.... good weight... taken care of.... smiling face.... being loved.....could this photo been in sharper focus..... yes. could many of the higher ranking photos be as sensitive, as loving as well composed yep... but they weren't.. they were just better focussed....... almost time for me to leave this site..... be proud of your entry

Greetings...

Welcome to DPChallenge :) I noticed that this is your first submission to the site. I chose to quote from the comment that 777STAN left on your photo because it shows a situation that is all too common here and quite disturbing at the same time. I find that most novice photographers believe this statement, and I used to believe it myself. When a beginning photographer, who takes the hobby seriously, is getting started and learning how to control the camera, technique is more important to them than content. As you browse the higher scoring photographs on this site, you will see that most of them are usually more about technique than content as well. Since this site is primarly composed of beginning photographers, it seems that 'eye candy' photographs that are strong with technical merits are the ones that do better than photos that seem to have a very high value in subject content.

During the 5 years I have been experimenting with photography, I have watched people who started about the same time evolve as photographers. They all started out pursuing technical excellence regardless of subject and content. As they became proficient with the technical aspects, they began to apply those skills in pursuing meaningful subjects and content :)

For me, content often overrides EVERYTHING else about a photograph. When I look at a photo, I prefer to absorb what the photographer is trying to show me rather than how he is showing it to me. So, my quote of the day will be:

"Good photography is more about content than technique."

Technique is important, but not as important as the content :)

Just some food for thought...

It could be a nice shot if this lovely baby wasn't out of focus... ;)

I always feel bad giving low marks for shots of babies, but the focus here is really, really, really lacking...

Beautiful child and a great happy face! ... Successful agreed, however the lack of good focus hurts this tremendously.

I would have liked this a lot sharper.

Very cute - especially the expression. The focus is kind of soft, and that straight-on flash is kind of flat.

What a sweet face! What a sense of timing! What a great eye!
Sadly, however, good photography is more about technique than content. (I should know. Just check out my scores,...although I do take some comfort in the fact that somebody has to make the "basement" until "dues are paid.")
Having said all that & applying what I have learned so far,...the over-all soft focus of this photo detracts from its otherwise pleasant ambiance.
This is the balance sheet for photographing one's own child, especially an infant. You don't want to use flash & hurt the baby's eyes. You don't always have time to set-up a tripod. (Monopods are helpful, but only if you keep the camera attached.) Hand-held camera-shake in low light is inevitable. Yet, when my little girl is in a playful mood, I will grab the camera & go to shooting one after another as fast as the shutter will open, even past the point where my arms start to burn.
Personal Rule of Thumb: "You can't take too many digital photos!" (Or "You have to break a lot of eggs to make an omelette.") :)
