I wanted to capture a strong image that representade both hope and despair.

Light: 0ne 100w clear bulb without reflector.

Setup: me against a black wall, my kidbrother holding the light in my face and pressing the shutter(kinda hard with my hand tied up).

I have tried to capture this all weekend and had several outtakes, then just as I was uploading my submission, I got the idea of using a flower instead of just a photo of my brothers tied up hands and since he's the worst model ever I had him push the shutter.

Hello from the Critique Club!

My first impression is "Wow!". This is a very dramatic shot. The lighting is perfect and the use of black & white really makes this shot. The composition is excellent. The pose looks as if he is praying, the rope makes me think he is a prisoner of some kind, and the flower tells me that his spirit is unbroken. All together these elements combine to form a very powerful statement. You mentioned in your notes that you wanted to capture a "strong image that represents both hope and despair", well I don't think you truly depict despair. I believe that this picture shows his spirit triumphing over despair.

Congratulations on your highest scoring entry so far! However, I feel that this photo deserves a higher score than what you received. But don't feel bad about that! This picture requires the viewer to take some time and think about what they are seeing. The average voter on DPC spends about 2-3 seconds judging a picture, which means that you only get credit for the first impression. This photo requires the viewer to soak in what they are seeing, and only then can it's real impact be appreciated.

I don't know how long you have been in photography, but I am really impressed by this shot. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Love the pose and perspective...not sure about the rope around the wrists as I'm not getting the meaning in it. Nice DOF and good use of the single source lighting.
