Wow, definitely a nice shot and huge improvement over the first one. I would like to have seen Southern Gentleman's post-processed version to see how that improved it further. I think that it could benefit greatley from either a curves or a levels adjustment. Levels is easier to learn and helps a lot.
BTW, I just looked through the tutorials and was very surprised to find that there is not yet a tutorial on levels. |

I had to go back to your original picture and compare the two. I believe you improved upon the biggest thing which was the sky. However I feel your composition was better in the original.
The original also had a mood to it with the flush green grass and darkness which is not present in the take two challenge. That's why I feel your score only gained a few points.
What I would of like to have seen would of been a combination of both shots. Keeping the composition of the first and sky of the take two. The lighting was not great in this shot looks almost mid day making shadows flat and taking away from depth. Even with the composition and lighting problem in the take two shot i feel you could of pulled it out if you would of taken advantage of more editing since this time it was an advanced editing challenge.
I took your picture and done some more editing in PS/CS to let you see what I am talking about. If you would like to see the edit you can at here
Overall a good picture that needed just a little more mood IMO. Keep up the good work.
I hope you find this critique helpful and if you have any questions feel free to contact me.

thankyou for the comments you made above, I am very new at this and did not want to do anything that could disqualify me, you were right I was so keen to change the sky as there were so many comments about it in the first challenge that I rushed out at mid day while it was blue and with a bit of cloud and snapped away, just assuming that the rest would be the same except for the trees as they were bare in the first photo. I am not used to changing photos, I send them as I take them so maybe I should learn how to make them look a bit different through Photo Shop or Acdsee and when I enter a challenge for Advanced editing then I can achieve a better image. I suppose I am one of those point and shoot photographers but I want to become so much better, since joining DPC I have learned what Canvas Size meant and can frame photos so maybe I can learn more, thanks again. |
