 This bird, as far as I can tell with my trusty bird book, is a Yellow-Shafted Flicker. Earlier this week, I noticed that a hole had appeared near the top of this slowly dying oak tree in my yard, but I thought it was from a branch falling out. This afternoon, I happened to look up at the hole again, only to find this pretty bird and his (her?) mate, taking turns guarding what appears to be their home.

Yup, It's a flicker. Nice photo, just wish you could have zoomed in closer on the bird. Enjoy watching them raise their family :)
