No, it isn't cropped - the Nikon 5400 allows a 3:2 shooting aspect ratio.
At West Stow an early anglo-saxon village - 5th to 7th century - has been recreated (primarily for archaeological experimentation purposes) on the site of an original village of that time. Occasionally, throughout the summer, families volunteer to live there, with only orignal tools, clothes and food to sustain them - partly for experimental purposes, and partly for their own sakes: to escape the modern world for a while. Can't always say I blame them.
I was trying to shoot the detail of the outside of this house - a recreation of a house on that site around 640AD: the wattle and daub contsruction, the hanging jute sack, the gateway and the hrdling around it, when this mother and child came out to do I don't know what.
Thought I'd avoid the black-and-white thing: I rather expect a lot of those.
If I were allowed to edit it ... for dpc I'd lighten it a little, as in general I think most voters have their monitors set pretty dark. Other than that, I'm not sure there's much I'd do. have looked at cropping out the cutting block and logs low left, but they're actually a good lead-in to the image, compositionally.
:-) My other half thinks the thumbnail looks like a Gainsborough or Constable painting. Be happier if she'd said that abou the full-size, but hey. |

Awesome work. This meets the challenge in a particularly unique way, I think, as it makes me feel that I have gone "back in time."
Technically, I can find little to fault. I do think lightening it a touch would help, not necessarily because my monitor is too dark, but because some of the shadowed areas look a little too ominous to me. Though black and white or sepia would have added a different feeling to the shot, I think color is very effective in this instance, and you did well to leave it (or shoot it) that way.
compositionally, I don't know that i would change anything. The sack, while it does vie for attention, also is what makes this seem so long ago to me. I think it provides some effective counterbalance to the shot.
And it does look like a painting.
Great work.
Best to you in future challenges.

A wonderfully sweet image, feels very much like opening a door into the past. There's a hint of softness to the woman, as if she moved a little while the photograph was being taken; with everything else so crisp, it's a minor distraction from a lovely photo. |

nicely done. i wish that burlap sack was not so prominent, as it leads the eye away from the people, which should be the primary subject. |

This shot has a "painting" look and feel to it. I think you got lucky on the colors. Great shot, nice composition. 8. |

Wow, I've been disappointed with other submissions so far, so thank you for putting forth a strong effort. The only suggestion I can make is to spread out the distance between the girls and the sack on the roof, so that the girls could be placed a little further to the right side of the shot. Excellent photo, good luck. |

I don't quite understand the clothing (it looks like they are in bathrobes) Actually I think it's the greenish robe that's throwing me off. If it were just the young girl in the shot I think this would have been a lot better. Surroundings certainly meet the challenge. |
