Title is a lyric from "So Far Away" by Dire Straits.

The photo is of Mt. Evans at sunrise, with the moon still hanging above it. Anything above the treeline looks rather desolate and bare.

Look at the photo... what's there, really? A bare mountaintop. A Moon that's far away. Lots of rock and a few scant patches of snow. There isn't much of interest. It looks so... uh, what's the word? That's right... desolate. Such irony that my shot should suffer from the very quality which served as the challenge theme, eh?

Another that should have scored highter (imho). I love the colors in this, and the concept of being far away is interesting, and I think the moon adds a necessary compositional feature, so that it isn't just a 'boring' mountain top. It gives the image some interest, and the viewer something to think about, in connection with the title. The mountain top is definately desolate looking. Nice job!
I'm looking forward to seeing your flower entry!

hi from CPT2!

I love the blue! The gradient gives it that little bit extra. the negative space makes it very interesting...

Well done:)

Not as high of a finisher as i expected. I really liked the emptyness of this picture. I love mountains of any type! I dont think the moon was integral to the picture, especially as it related to the challenge. Even though the pic uses negative space well, the feeling of desolation might have been strengthened with a little more of the barren mountain showing. Loved the title and gave it a 7 FWIW.

Desolation was a tricky challenge. First 5.3 isn't bad at all, but to get the higher score you needed to carry that desolate feel AND have a subject of emphasis. Certainly this is as desolate as any shot...but it doesn't have something to grab our eye. In fact, the moon does that the most, which pulls us away from the desolate mountainside.

Look at the Top 10 shots and notice how they capture the same feel, but still have a subject.

nice simple composition, and the title helps give a lonley desolate feel ad really explains what desolation means to you

Clean air, nice light, a hopeful moon, white snow, and good brown earth. Let me see, my idea of desolation living in NYC is not this. I expect everyone really has different ideas according to their locality.

Man this place looks familiar! The moon really ties the composition together.
