There were a few problems I faced in the execution of this shot.
The first, and most serious, was the fact that I didn't have a tripod with me. The EXIF shows I took it at 21h58, and even though the sun is setting late here this time of year, it's still pretty dark then (so much so that I was almost unable to find my lenscap after dropping it). Definitely tripod light.
In the end I found a wonderful gate that I strapped my camera bag to, and used to support the camera. The problem with this was that it severely limited the options I had in terms of camera placement, so composition became a function of slight pan and zoom.
The next problem, was the different exposure levels needed for the moon, and for the horses. Since this was for a "Basic" challenge, there was no chance of post-processing using a split-mask in PS. What was actually needed was a graduated ND filter. Which I didn't have.
Anyway, I liked the picture, and entered it with the compromised exposure anyway. I was just excited to be in a DP Challenge!
But now that the challenge is over, I thought I'd give the photo a bit more treatment to see if I could get it closer to what I saw when I shot it. This edit would have complied with "Advanced" rules (well hopefully, since I cropped out a few of the distracting branches at the top right).
The moon is still a bit washed out, and maybe I overdid it a bit with noise removal, but I like the kind of dreamlike feel that the photo has... especially in the moonlight context.
Anyway, I had a lot of fun, and am glad that I am now officially entering challenges.
