I'm not a pro but have had 3 paying jobs for outdoor portraits now and the first thing that caught my eye were was the bg being too busy, no dof, quite a few hotspots, and seems oof. Coloring seems a little washed out too which can happen when shooting with a lot of sunlight.

classic case to use flsh in the middle of the day...
take a look on something interseting.. the kid on the right.. - look at the route above is head.. for me is was a major distraction.. i dont know if you did it on purpuse.. but its just "continue" his head.
going down and shooting from straight the level of the kids eyes would solve it...:) |

As said, the lighting is very harsh. It's washing out your color. The background isn't too appealing. Looks like dead grass/brush? Try a shady, overcast day or use fill-flash. |

Arty gave some helpful advice. When I shoot outside during the day, I generally either find shade or make shade, and use the onboard flash as a fill flash.
You might be able to make this better with a little dodge/burn - on the faces to brighten them up and on the background to add more contrast. Did you use a levels adjustment? That might help with overall tonal range as well. |

One of the dangers of photographing during a bright day. While the pose is sweet and candid-like, you have a lot of washing out.. harsh shadows (especially on the boy), a huge lack of contrast (dark areas aren't very dark), and a lack of detail. Some ways of avoiding this are:
Shoot later (or earlier) in the day.
Shoot in more shaded areas.
Try to meter for the brightest spots on your subject (but really, just avoid direct sunlight if possible)
Use reflectors and/or fill-flash if needed. Experiement a lot with both.
