 I took the photo on my kitchen table at close-up range. I used a black background and depressed the flash just right to limit light exposure, then adjusted with color balance and unsharp mask.

atupdate, I appreciate your encouraging comments. I am very pleased with the finish. I was wishing I could have entered this photo in the 'desolate' challenge a while back, but the timing wasn't right. Thank you for the vote! Obviously I don't know how to post a response to a particular commentor, but thank you all for your comments.

I like the lighting and background on this image and the detail in the withered rose pedals is exceptional. This image is interesting to the point that I wish I could look at it from several different angles. You have the misfortune that this particular challenge has several entries that with pop. The subtleties of this entry will probably get lost among them. Bump to a 7.
