First, what's bluetack?

Second, here are a few things to improve in this shot:
1) The contrast is low between the subject and the background. Do a search for "photoshop curves" and "photoshop levels" in Google to find some good tips.

2) Photos are usually more interesting when the subject is off-center. You'll see a lot of references to the "rule of thirds," meaning that a powerful composition technique is to put the subject 1/3 of the way from each edge. Here's an example from my portfolio:

3) Your subject should either be very sharply focused or look like it's deliberately out of focus while the background or elements are focused.

Learn about depth of field and how the aperture and distance to your subject affect it. Depth of field is how much distance is sharply focused within the picture. Aperture is how wide the opening is on your camera that the light goes through. Generally speaking, the larger the aperture (noted as a smaller number in the f-stop), the shallower the depth of field.

Here's one great article:
//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depth_of_field

4) Watch out for distracting background.

Welcome to the site. I've only been here a few weeks myself.

Try to take your score as simply an indication that you have a lot to learn, and then study other photos on this site, read the tutorials, etc.

An excellent starting place is with DrAchoo's portfolio, but really start by reading the two sets of tips linked from the top of his profile: //www.dpchallenge.com/profile.php?USER_ID=40718

I've been adding favorite pictures to my list like a madman, so feel free to use that as a reference, too:

I have no idea what this is. Paper pulp maybe...? :)
07/08/2006 05:38:30 AM
I am not sure how this meets the challenge of stationery .. perhaps it is entered in the wrong one.
07/07/2006 09:34:10 AM
Not sure what it is or how it relates to the challenge. The lighting makes the overall appearance of the image look flat.
07/06/2006 08:49:52 PM
I have no idea what the stationery connection here is.
07/06/2006 02:37:29 PM
I am sure you would disagree or you wouldn't have entered the photo in this challenge, but IMO DNMC.

What in the world is this? The title doesn't even tell me. And what does it have to do with stationery?
07/06/2006 07:33:17 AM
I'm not really sure what I'm looking at here
07/06/2006 06:40:45 AM
Interesting. I like the texture of this subject.
07/06/2006 03:52:23 AM
I am not able to see the connection between this image & the challenge theme.
07/05/2006 10:53:29 PM
Unfortunately, I don't have a clue what this is....
07/05/2006 09:48:48 PM
Not sure what it's supposed to be - the title doesn't help either.
07/05/2006 08:20:49 PM
Sorry, I don't get it.
07/05/2006 03:54:15 PM
Hmmmmmm......I've stared and stared and I don't know what it is or how it fits the challenge. I don't even know what the title has to do with the photo.
07/05/2006 02:32:28 PM
I am not sure what this is. The focus is too soft for me, and the upper part of the background is distracting.
07/05/2006 11:59:26 AM
no context - i have no idea what i'm looking at
07/05/2006 09:11:04 AM
????
07/05/2006 05:03:57 AM
Stationery?
07/05/2006 03:58:16 AM
I can't work out what I am looking at!
