There is a story to this image. I should sometimes be known as “the Absent Minded Photographer”, and that I was able to get this shot at all was a small miracle. I packed my gear in my Lowepro bag, made sure I had a charged battery, grabbed my tripod and headed out the door at around 6:30 PM, July 4th, 2006.
Traffic and parking are never insignificant complications when going to see the fireworks display at Tempe Town Lake in Tempe, Arizona, and tonight was no different. I was thankful I had left early, but by no means did I beat the crowds.
I bought my tickets, entered the park and found what I thought would be a pretty nice location to photograph from. At about 8:00 PM I began to set up, got my camera out and went to take a test shot only to find I had left my 1 gig CF card in my laptop at home. With less than an hour before the show, I was not going to be able to retrieve my card.
I was mortified! With no other option, I decided to see if I could find someone in the crowd of about 20,000 people to let me borrow a spare CF card. (Yeah right!)
The first person I asked looked at me like I was loony tunes, and even though I knew he was lying when he said he didn’t have a spare (Bogen tripod, Nikon Digital, big camera bag and yet he didn’t have the guts to look me in the eye when he told me he didn’t have a spare. Uh huh, sure), I moved on. Much to my utter disbelief and surprise, the second gentleman I asked, took my business card, matched it with my ID, looked at me like I was completely daft for leaving my CF card in my laptop and handed me a one gig microdrive to use.
To this kind gentleman, I dedicate this shot!
