The old man in this photo is my Grandfather. He has had a long, at times hard, life. It is his 90th birthday and I captured him staring out the window as if he was reminiscing life.

Thanks Rompy for your constructive feedback, the pony tail thing was the one thing I didn't like either, I am still very much a novice and need to learn how to edit these sorts of things. Yes there are some comments that are not constructive ... which I don't take personally, but I guess you have to expect that when publishing a photo for the public to comment on. BTW thankyou for the 9 :-).

I think this photo was very good and think it is quite insulting to see comments the likes of "ugh" and "alter it for the children". I thought it fit the challenge really well and was very compelling. The sparkly hat and folks in the background made it even better for me. The only thing I am distracted by is that i keep thinking your grandpa has a ponytail(the girls hair behind him!) I gave you a 9 and wish it had done better. Oh well, can't please 'em all.

I love this picture. I like the contrast with such obvious suffering and a party hat.

To me, this picture says the progression of a human life is both a blessing and a curse. I'll assume this is a birthday party or other such celebration. The honoree looks a bit sad and alone.

I haven't seen my great-great-great grandma in year! As perfect in essence as this photo is...it may be disturbing for some viewers even though it represents a natural fact of life.

Wow. I can't help but feel sorry for this old man. I think you captured his emotion pretty well, to me he seems to be possibly thinking of past times.

Very interesting photo. I raises the question of whether extending life is really progress.

Oh my goodness. Why publish this picture. There is absolutely nothing good about this picture. I'm sure he's a nice guy or someone special in your life, but for the sake of the children watching, please try to alter this picture in some way.

ummm, what ?

Well presented, you can sense the progress. DOF is great. My only gripe is what you have and haven't chopped off in the background.

Interesting; but I don't quite know know how to vote on this shot? I think you had the opportunity to capture an amazing picture. The old man has a rather disturbing face and It would have been a perfect 10 without that silly hat and background, and also by creating a rather more dramatic B/W composition. What happens when I start analyzing this picture without going to deep ... is the hat takes away the viewers eyes from the actual object and having those two people in the background doesn't help. A crop from the top and leaving more of the old man's neck would have been better.
