Thanks for all the nice comments.
Although this image didn't do as well as I hoped in the voting, I think part of the problem was that many people couldn't quite get the connection with "food." In the earlier "abstract" challenges the instructions said that if the observer could tell what the image was a picture of, it wasn't an "abstract." I guess I took this too literally!
As one observer guessed, however, this actually is a shot of a slice of matzo which I had placed on a window sill so it was lighted from behind. This put a lot of light through the holes which were very bright and blown out in the centers. Here is the original shot:
For post-processing, I cropped and rotated the image, then created an invert adjustment layer. This changed the color to the bluish palatte, but made the holes completely black.
So I used the layer style's blending controls to "blend if" and backed off the blending for very brignt points in the underlying image. By picking just the right setting I could achieve the white holes with the black rims.
I guess I might have gotten a few more voting points, and maybe not the 1's and 2's, if I had used a more literal title. Ah well! |

Not sure what food it is but I think this image is what the challenge is all about. I've seen several nice photos but not many of which I would consider abstract. This one fits to a T. Nice job. |

this is abstract to the point that I can't tell what it is on alny level. This is not a bad thing of course. Judging just on the appearance, I like it. Well done. 7 |

Hmm.. a cracker? I like this! Abstract without being too awkward and strange, and the border is nice too, neat but unobtrusive. Well done! |

I'm sorry, but I can't recognize this as food at all... it's an interesting image, but I have no idea what it is! |
