The Fisher King appears in many myths, stories, poems, etc. According to Arthurian legend, he is the keeper of the Holy Grail. What does this have to do with anything? Maybe this is my political statement, my unfathomable (to me) feelings currently about my country. No, my country is not the Fisher King. My country is out at the end of that dock (see the flag) as the world disappears (figuratively for my country, not literally). The more my country acts and exists, the more it seems we are in a sea of emptiness. At any rate... How does the Fisher King tie in? He presides over his land, the Wasteland, a barren, desolate, sterile place. Why am I waiting for him? To answer the question of course. I don't see myself as the Grail Knight, Percival, Galahad, just as someone who cares...

"O you who turn the wheel and look to windward,
Consider Phlebas, who was once handsome and tall as you."
-T.S. Eliot, "The Wasteland"

This is a great example of where the high contrast conveys feelings similar to what you put in your description. I didn't get the full detail you wrote up, but I definitely understood the idea of being alone, with no clear idea what's out there.

I wonder whether it'd convey it even more to crop it more to the left, so you see less dock and more emptiness on the left?

This works really well as high key or high contrast or whatever it is!

Strangely enough this "high key" image works for me, mostly, but is missing a bit on the left. Maybe a little more contrast in the water would help. Nice.
