Recorded the original as jpeg. Still learning about raw. Brought image into Photoshop post processing included slight cropping, curves, usm and resampled for challenge. This is my first submission. I figure the only way to get better is to submit and get some feed back. Thank you in advance.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

Hi Brenda,
May I first say welcome to DPC. I see that this is your first competition entry and that you are keen to learn and improve through feedback... well despite the lack of comments to your entry in this challenge I think you will find that you have come to the right place.
The DPC website is a great community of photographers and the challenges will certainly help you to have good reason to keep using your camera...

I like this picture, it is nicely exposed, warm toned and shows some thought and recognition on fininding a good photo in everyday objects. It is good to develop a photographers 'eye' and see photos around you.

Overall the photo works well but the central spot of bright light is slightly over-exposed and distracts a little. I think you should re-visit this subject and try alternative compositions. Perhaps showing the whole lamp as this composition feels slightly cramped.

Regarding the challenge, I think that you have met the challenge but that your subject choice in this instance is too subtle for the voters. In a challenge (especially a challenge with so many entries) the voters will not spend more than a few seconds on each shot. Subtle shots often don't score well. Take a look at the results and the comments to the top 20 images to see what voters like...

I hope that you will enter more challenges as I would like to see more or your pictures. Feel free to drop me an e-mail if you would like further help or advice.

Kind regards

Chris

Hi Brenda,
Nice photo you have here. You have an eye for details and that's really good. What I love about the photo is it gives a nice warmth and cozy feel in the colours.

The composition is careful and proper.

That's what I felt made the photo look "normal" and ranked much lower than it is.

It took a while before I associated the photo with the topic lines. And I think that I have a problem with my own photo too. Usually, the judges here would do a quick glance and place a vote especially when it's a mega-large challenge like this one. :)

You might want to post process it a little more .. just to have some fun and see if you can get a nice abstract....

I did not manage vote on this challenge, but it would have been a 6 for me.. :)

Cheers
Eric
