Challenge: Black and White in Color (Advanced Editing IV*)
Camera: Canon EOS-300D Rebel
Location: Kariani, Greece
Date: Jul 19, 2006
Aperture: f/7.5
ISO: 800
Shutter: 406 sec
Galleries: Sky, Astrophotography
Date Uploaded: Jul 21, 2006

This is an image of M8 known as the Lagoon Nebula (at the left) and M20 known as the Trifid Nebula (at the upper right side).
The camera was attached on Celestron C80 ED f/7.5 (semi-apochromatic refractor telescope), a method of astrophotography that is called "prime focus".
The difficult part was the guiding of this long exposure in order to correct the tracking errors of the mount (Celestron CG5 Advanced GT) and avoid the star-trails effect.
It was done manually (through Celestron C8 catadioptric telescope) and this was quite tricky, cause I used a 6 mm eyepiece (with a lightened red cross) without a barlow, so the magnification was not really enough for precise corrections. But I' ve tried it as better as I could and for 406 seconds I was totally concentrated and still over the eyepiece, while dozens of mosquitos made a real party around me :)
There was quite a lot of processing in order mainly to reduce noise.

The colors are the main eyecatching part of this photo, which says to me it's not meeting the challenge.

Cool photo, though!

I really appreciate astrophotography and this is a great photo, but I believe the intention of the challenge was to take a b&w photo in color mode. This is why desaturation was discouraged. I don't think the challenge was to shoot a color photo with b&W in it. It may be a suttle difference of interpretation. I wonder if this photo would meet the zen challenge?

here I see color on a black a white sky.....I am a physicist and love the space but I amn't secure that the shot match the contest :) 5
