Crop, saturation, hue, sharpness adjustments. I had this idea instantly - black coffee & white cream in a colorful cup. I was in a coffee shop the next morning after seeing the challenge details, and there it was.

It was my first entry, I had a very hard weekend just before. And a serendipity moment. A very big step for me.

Note added January 31, 2007:
I'm very curious... but this picture gets so many views still, at least a few hits a week. This picture means a lot to me and I'm so glad that people are still looking at it, but I'm so curious as to where they are finding it, and why they like to click on the thumbnail, and what they think when they see it at full-size. I'm so proud of this shot, for mostly personal reasons. Thank you so--- much to those who do look at it (even if you don't write in ;-)

A lot of people make the same mistake for first try as to not fitting the challenge, shoot they make it after submitting to 100, with that said welcome to dpc, nice shot btw the way the cup and saucer sits in the focus is neat and the lighting gives it a moody feel...

Makes me want to go sit in a window alone with a cup...

Good luck in the future challenges hope you dont scare from your first attempt being last.. cause really its pretty good.

This was my first ever entry, and I am a newbie to this in general and thought I'd give it a try. I didn't realize the rules - but as soon as the voting began, and I saw all the other awesome shots I did a lovely hand-to-the-forehead "d'oh". That's ok, I enjoyed it and have already submitted again - you can only learn (and read the rules better.) Thank you for the comments everybody. :-)

The picture is soft and I feel it DNMC due to too much color.

Way too colorful. Needs more DOF, and creame is overexposed. While I am at it, use a cup that isn't stained.

IMO, this photo dnmc. I believe the intention of the challenge was to take a b&w photo in color mode. This is why desaturation was discouraged. I don't think the challenge was to shoot a color photo with b&W in it. It may be a suttle difference in interpretation. As for the photo itself, a sharper focus might help. Good luck in future challenges.

Sorry, but IMHO there's way too much color in this to meet the spirit of this challenge.

Pretty shot but it should be black and white or greyscale. Too much color here.

Your subject appears to be the bowl and cup of coffee which aren't black and white. A little more emphasis on the coffee and Milk would have hleped. The photo also ins't really that sharp either.
