This is the 5th race at Saratoga Race Track in upstate NY on July 30th, 2006. This was shot at the last turn before the final stretch. Recently I began trying to force a slower shutter speed to create a blurred background while panning to keep the subject in focus. Last year I was able to get some nice shots at 1/50 speed but the sun was too bright this time and the best I could get was 1/100 without risking overexposure.

Had I voted I probably would've given this a 6. I think there's some great motion here, and that bodes well for an "action" challenge. There are a few hot spots that distract the eye, the blue jockey's hat and a bit of the rail on the inside section of the track. I also tried 'cropping' the image myself by adjusting the screen size and I liked it better with that blurry reddish/pink area on the right cropped out. I found it made the image feel a bit more open and almost as if they could be close to the finish line - for some reason the addition of the reddish area made it feel closed up and less dramatic to me. I'm just weird that way I guess. Sharp focus can almost always be better but I think you did a good job here, especially when panning.

Now we're getting somewhere. I've just rated about 10% of the photos and a lot of my comments have been "uh, this is frozen motion..." This is good motion blur - fence moving by quickly, horses legs in action - I would have liked a little less harsh light to the horses weren't in so much shadow but not much you can do about that. Good capture.

Those horses are really moving! I can almost hear the thunder. ;^) You either have a very sharp lens or did some serious noise reduction on this. Compositionally it's fine. Looks like full sunlight, but you exposed for it ok. Should do alright in the challenge with this. Good luck.

Good job on a steady pan shot.
